Kuantan Government Evaluates Further Measures to Control Fire

KUANTAN : The Malaysian government is exploring cloud seeding as an option to combat a massive peatland fire in Kuantan, which has been burning for nearly two weeks.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said cloud seeding requires extensive planning and cannot be implemented without favorable weather conditions and expert approval.

Fire Still Active Despite Existing Efforts

Since February 22, the fire has destroyed 137 hectares of coconut plantations, gradually spreading into adjacent forested areas. Although authorities have attempted water bombing, firebreaks, and area flooding, full containment remains a challenge.

Nik Nazmi noted that peatland fires are difficult to extinguish, especially in remote locations where high temperatures and wind conditions accelerate the spread.

Future Plans for Fire Prevention

The government is pushing for increased budget allocations under RMK-13 to enhance peatland fire prevention, aiming to introduce better monitoring and early suppression systems.
