Sarawak Temporary Ban on Heavy Vehicles for Smoother Traffic Flow

KUCHING: Sarawak will temporarily restrict goods vehicles from using the roads during Hari Raya, following the Federal Government’s move to improve traffic conditions and road safety.

State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin stated that the specific enforcement dates will be announced soon in coordination with the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

“This restriction is a regular practice during festive seasons, including Chinese New Year, to help reduce congestion and accidents on our roads,” he said at a Hari Raya road safety campaign launch on Wednesday (March 12).

Preventing Traffic Jams and Accidents

Federal Transport Minister Anthony Loke had earlier declared that nationwide restrictions on goods vehicles would be in place on March 29-30 and April 5-6 to prevent heavy traffic buildup.

Loke emphasized that limiting commercial vehicle movement during peak travel days would help reduce accident risks and ensure a smoother journey for road users.

“One of our key concerns is safety, as heavy vehicles pose greater risks in congested areas. By restricting their movement, we are taking proactive steps to enhance road conditions,” he said.

Previous implementations of similar restrictions have proven successful in managing high traffic volumes during major festive periods, including Chinese New Year.

Educational Campaign for Road Users

In addition, Lee revealed that Sarawak’s road safety campaign will be launched on March 17 in Mukah, featuring the distribution of Raya-themed green packets with road safety reminders.

“Our red packet initiative during Chinese New Year was well received, and we are now introducing green packets for Hari Raya, aiming to reinforce responsible driving habits,” he said.

The green packets will showcase cartoon depictions of Sarawak’s transportation network, including roads, rivers, and the state airline, AirBorneo, while carrying important safety messages such as wearing seat belts, using helmets, and obeying speed limits.

“Our priority is ensuring that everyone reaches their destinations safely to celebrate Hari Raya with their families,” Lee added.
