Anwar Mourns Death of Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda
PM Anwar Ibrahim expresses condolences on the passing of former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, aged 90. Remembers his contributions to ASEAN-Japan relations.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has conveyed his condolences to the family of former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, who died on Thursday from heart failure at the age of 90.
In a Facebook post on 28 October, Anwar described Fukuda as a statesman who had devoted much of his public life to strengthening understanding, friendship and cooperation among Asian nations. He said Fukuda’s commitment to ASEAN-Japan relations rested on the belief that lasting peace and shared prosperity must be built on mutual trust, respect and a shared sense of purpose.
Anwar said Fukuda had upheld a vision of Asia where differences could be resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation, in keeping with the spirit of the Fukuda Doctrine. “On behalf of the Government and people of Malaysia, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and the people of Japan,” Anwar wrote.
Fukuda holds a notable place in Japanese political history as the first prime minister whose father also held the post. His father, Takeo Fukuda, served as prime minister from 1976 to 1978.
