Transport Minister Loke: NGVs to Be Banned Starting July 2025
Starting from July 1, 2025, Malaysia will no longer allow natural gas vehicles (NGVs) to be used on the roads.
Safety Concerns Lead to Ban
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government will prohibit the registration and operation of all natural gas vehicles (NGVs) from July 1, 2025, announced Transport Minister Anthony Loke. This Cabinet decision, finalized on October 2, also includes an end to NGV fuel sales, with PETRONAS initiating the phase-out immediately.
Assistance for Affected NGV Owners
To support NGV owners, Loke noted that eligible owners would receive RM3,000 vouchers for transitioning to petrol. Applications for fully NGV-powered vehicles will end December 31, while dual-fuel vehicles have until April 30, 2025.
Malaysia currently has 9,509 NGV taxis, 32,137 private NGVs, 2,150 natural-gas buses and trucks, and 587 NGVs used in machinery.
