Police are investigating a viral video of Era FM DJs allegedly mocking a religious ritual, with reports filed.

Police KUALA LUMPUR: Law enforcement has begun looking into a viral video featuring DJs from Era FM, which is alleged to have made fun of a religious practice.

According to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, six reports have been lodged regarding the video.

Viral Video Removed From Social Media

“Our probe confirmed that the video has since been removed. It had 95,400 views and was shared by 204 individuals,” he said on Tuesday (March 4).

Legal Ramifications for Those Involved

The case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA).

Under Section 298, those convicted could face up to one year in prison, a fine, or both. Meanwhile, Section 233 of the CMA carries a fine of up to RM50,000, a maximum one-year jail sentence, or both, plus an additional RM1,000 fine for every day the offense continues after conviction.

Police Complaint Filed and Apology Issued

“A 44-year-old engineer who saw the video on Facebook was among those who filed reports, claiming that individuals from the radio station were mocking Hindu religious traditions,” Razarudin explained.

He added that the DJs involved have since issued a formal apology on the Era FM Facebook page.
