Fast Food Worker Jailed for Theft, Attempted Murder
Court’s Decision
A former fast food employee, Muhammad Wan Azhar Azman, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for stealing a rented Honda Civic and attempting to murder the vehicle’s co-owner in Putrajaya in October.
Sessions Court Judge Izralizam Sanusi found Wan Azhar, 20, guilty of stealing the car and recklessly driving it, putting the life of Mohamed Jalil Iskandar, 28, in danger. Jalil had clung to the bonnet of the vehicle before being violently thrown off.
Wan Azhar was sentenced to 10 years for attempted murder and 4 years for theft, to be served concurrently. In making his ruling, the judge considered the social report, the defendant’s plea for leniency, and the prosecution’s arguments on the severity of the crime.
The Judge’s Remarks
“You have committed serious offences, and the victim suffered serious injuries,” said Judge Sanusi. “The victim spent five days in the ICU and continues to need long-term treatment.”
Wan Azhar, who represented himself in court, asked for a reduced sentence, expressing hope for his future.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nor Aisyah Mohamed Zanyuin requested a 20-year sentence to deter similar crimes and ensure justice for the victim, who remains in need of medical treatment.
Incident Summary
The car owner, Joshua Jeyaseelan David, 30, rented the car to Wan Azhar’s girlfriend on October 22. After she failed to return it, Joshua used a GPS tracker to find it in Putrajaya, where it was being driven by Wan Azhar.
Jalil tried to stop the car, but Wan Azhar reversed into him. Jalil clung to the bonnet as the car sped for several kilometers before Wan Azhar threw him off. Police arrested Wan Azhar on October 25, and he later guided investigators to the car, which they found at a public housing complex.
