Sinner Edges Past Bu Yunchaokete, Advances to China Open Final
No. 1, defeated Chinese wildcard Bu Yunchaokete on Tuesday, securing his spot in the China Open final against Carlos Alcaraz.
Jannik Sinner, ranked world No. 1, defeated Chinese wildcard Bu Yunchaokete on Tuesday, securing his spot in the China Open final against Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner, who faced a partisan crowd and a resurgent opponent, emerged victorious in straight sets, winning 6-3, 7-6 (7/3). The match, played in front of an enthusiastic Beijing audience, saw Bu challenge the defending champion with a spirited performance, particularly in the second set.
Bu, ranked 96th, came into the match full of confidence after a strong run in Hangzhou. He pressured Sinner early in the first set, but the Italian held firm, gradually taking control of the match. The second set ended in a tie break, where Sinner sealed the win with an ace on his third match point.
Sinner’s victory sets up a final clash with Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-3 in the other semi-final. The Spanish second seed has not dropped a set throughout the tournament and will be looking to claim his first China Open title.
The match comes amid renewed attention on Sinner’s doping case, which had previously been resolved. In March, Sinner tested positive for trace amounts of a banned substance, which he attributed to accidental contamination during treatment for a cut. While Sinner was initially cleared, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has since appealed the ruling, seeking a ban.
The final promises to be a thrilling contest between two of the game’s rising stars.
