A Daughter’s Last Message

BUKIT MERTAJAM: As 21-year-old Lee Zi Rou lay crushed beneath a container, she managed to utter her last words, “Mummy, I’m so in pain!” These words would be the last her mother, Lim, would hear.

An Ominous Call

Around 9:24 a.m., Lim received a call from her daughter, feeling an inexplicable sense of dread. “I was already afraid as I answered, fearing the worst,” she explained in a recorded interview with China Press. Lee’s silence only deepened her panic.

Desperate Efforts to Reach Her Daughter

Lim immediately set out with her other daughter, retracing Lee’s usual commute. Eventually, a stranger answered Lee’s phone, confirming her location and the tragic situation. When Lim reached the site, she could only helplessly watch as her daughter lay trapped.

Hopes Shattered

“I believed she had a chance because she could call,” Lim said tearfully.

Funeral Plans and Investigation

Lee’s funeral will take place on Sunday at the Berapit Crematorium. The 51-year-old truck driver is being held for further investigation, facing charges of causing death by reckless driving, which could result in up to 10 years of jail time, heavy fines, and a license ban. Initial tests indicated no signs of substance use.

Accident Details

The accident took place at Jalan Bukit Tengah as the driver lost control, causing the container to fall onto Lee’s car. Another driver involved, Tan Chou Theng, 25, was injured but is stable in the hospital.
