PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia Airlines has taken a significant step towards modernizing its fleet with the purchase of 30 new aircraft, while also securing an option to acquire another 30 in the coming years. The decision comes as part of the airline’s efforts to avoid operational setbacks and ensure smoother services for passengers.
Malaysia Aviation Group managing director Captain Datuk Izham Ismail confirmed that the order consists of 18 Boeing 737-8 and 12 Boeing 737-10 aircraft, all powered by the efficient CFM International LEAP-18 engines. These aircraft are expected to contribute to improved fuel savings and enhanced operational reliability.
Delivery Schedule and Industry Challenges
During a document exchange ceremony with The Boeing Company on Friday (March 21), Izham provided insights into the delivery schedule, stating that 11 aircraft had already been received, with the remainder set to arrive by 2027. He highlighted the importance of fleet renewal to prevent disruptions similar to those faced last year due to ageing planes and logistical hurdles.
“We must avoid repeating past challenges. Ordering new aircraft at the right time is critical to maintaining smooth operations and ensuring passengers experience minimal disruptions,” he explained.
