Child Abuse Cases in Malaysia: A Rising Concern in 2024
Government reports 2,240 child abuse cases in 2024, with a disturbing gender disparity in sexual abuse cases reported.
Introduction
KUALA LUMPUR: According to the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community, there have been 2,240 child abuse cases reported to the Social Welfare Department in 2024 up to August. This marks a decline from the 4,469 cases documented in 2023.
Overview of the Types of Abuse
The Ministry reported that the cases are categorized as physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Statistics indicate that girls are disproportionately affected, particularly in sexual and emotional abuse cases. Boys, on the other hand, faced more physical abuse.
Alarming Gender Discrepancy in Sexual Abuse
The sexual abuse statistics show a significant gender gap. In 2023, there were 2,328 cases of sexual abuse against girls, while only 195 cases involved boys. By mid-2024, the number had dropped to 1,149 cases involving girls and 111 cases involving boys.
The Rise in Sexual Crimes Against Children
Reports from the police further reveal that there were 5,401 sexual crimes against children in 2023, and 2,059 cases were reported between January and April 2024.
Government Initiatives to Combat Abuse
Minister Nancy Shukri reaffirmed the government’s commitment to child protection, highlighting laws like the Child Act 2001, the Sexual Offenses Against Children Act 2017, and the Care Centers Act 1993. Amendments made to the Child Act in 2016 have strengthened penalties for offenders.
The Need for Collective Effort
Nancy urged all sectors of society, including NGOs, the private sector, and the general public, to work together with the government to ensure that child abuse and sexual crimes are eradicated.
