Fatal Fire in Hougang: Three Dead and Dozens Evacuated

Fire Breaks Out in Hougang Housing Block

A horrific fire claimed the lives of three individuals in Hougang on January 9. The blaze prompted the evacuation of approximately 30 residents from the first seven floors of the 15-storey Block 971 Hougang Street 91.

Discovery of the Victims

SCDF confirmed that two victims were found inside a bedroom of the affected unit on the third floor. Later, a third body was discovered. Firefighters had difficulty accessing the unit due to the large number of items stored inside.

Firefighting Efforts and Rescue

The fire department responded to the alarm at about 12:40 pm. With the assistance of the police, residents were evacuated as a precaution, and the fire was extinguished by 3:15 pm. Among the rescued animals were a cat, bird, and eight rabbits.

Eyewitness Testimonies

Clarence Lee, a hawker who lives in a nearby block, smelled something burning and saw the smoke blocking his view. Other residents also reported hearing loud bangs before noticing the smoke.

Evacuation Experience of Residents

Said, a resident on the second floor, mentioned that the occupant of the affected unit was a man in his 60s who was often seen walking his dog. Another evacuee, a housewife, shared her frustration at not being able to return home after several hours of being displaced.

Authorities’ Response and Ongoing Investigation

MP Ng Ling Ling of Ang Mo Kio GRC reported that the authorities are still working to identify the victims. Assistance for affected residents is available at the residents’ network centre at Block 976.

Support for Residents and Town Council’s Role

The Ang Mo Kio Town Council has been cleaning up debris and soot in the affected areas. They are also collaborating with HDB to resolve hoarding issues that were identified in the affected unit.
