PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s long wait for a medal in the World Junior Diving Championships has come to an end, thanks to Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohd Nazim.
Exceptional Performance in the Finals
The 18-year-old diver won a bronze medal in the boy’s 3m springboard final (16-18 years) at the championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, achieving a total of 506.75 points. China’s Yan Xin dominated the event with 546.60 points, while Norway’s Isak Borslien took silver with 508.35 points.
Yong Rui Jie’s Efforts
Yong Rui Jie, another Malaysian participant, finished in 10th place, scoring 440.30 points.
Preliminaries Showed Nurqayyum’s Potential
Nurqayyum’s medal hopes were high after a strong preliminary performance, where he ranked second with 479.30 points, behind only Yan Xin’s 524.85.
Malaysia Returns to Global Recognition
This milestone marks Malaysia’s first podium finish since 2006, when Bryan Nickson Lomas earned bronze in the boy’s 10m platform (16-18 years) in Kuala Lumpur. Bryan had also won gold in the boy’s 3m springboard at the 2004 edition held in Belem, Brazil.
