Transport Ministry to Assess Senior Licence Renewal

Proposal Under Review for Senior Citizens’ Licence Renewal

SEPANG: The Ministry of Transport is considering a proposal that would require senior citizens aged 65 and above to undergo health and competency assessments before renewing their Malaysian driving licences.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that while the proposal is being considered, a detailed review and evaluation will be conducted before any decisions are made.

“We need to thoroughly study the proposal report first. We won’t rush into any changes,” Loke said during a press conference after chairing the National Logistics Task Force meeting on Monday (Nov 25).

Rising Concerns Over Accidents Involving Elderly Drivers

The comments came after inquiries were raised about whether older drivers should be subjected to competency and health evaluations prior to renewing their licences.

Earlier media reports pointed to a growing concern over road accidents involving elderly drivers, with experts suggesting that stricter requirements could potentially reduce the risk.

One proposal is to require those aged 65 and older to pass health and competency checks before they are allowed to continue driving. Currently, there is no upper age limit for driving in Malaysia.

Plans for Logistics Hub in Negeri Sembilan

In other developments, Loke also shared that a site in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, is being considered for the establishment of the country’s logistics hub.

“The state government is supportive of this initiative and is currently identifying suitable land for development,” Loke said.

He also mentioned that the Malaysian Investment Development Authority had provided details of incentives designed to draw investments for the Smart Logistics Complex, including tax exemptions up to 70%, as announced in Budget 2025. – Bernama
